I finally know what I want the actual theme of this blog to be!
When I was a kid, one of my favorite movies was Harriet the Spy (based on the book, which I’d of course already read). There is a scene in the movie where Harriet’s nanny, Golly (played by Rosie O’Donnell), takes Harriet and her friends to visit a friend of hers, “Mrs. W”, a unique woman with a yard full of stunning projects and knick-knacks, any kid’s dream.
This was one of my favorite scenes as a kid, but going back now and watching it again, it strikes me in a completely different way. It’s easy to imagine that you can be that crazy lady with the fantastic yard when you’re nine. But you realize the courage and strength of character that truly takes when you are grown up and really living your life.
The kids look in at the garden and mention to Golly that Mrs. W seems “unusual”, to which Golly replies: “There are as many ways to live as there are people in this world. And each one deserves a closer look.”
That is the new mission statement of this blog! A closer look at unique ways to live, a celebration of the different ways people go about their lives.
Here’s the scene from the movie, if you’re interested. It starts at 3:48.
Please forgive the mess and sporadic posting as I rearrange things to make room and create excellent content for this new mission statement. I am really looking forward to sharing some interesting people and lifestyles with you!
